Fixing porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles are a man-made improvement on the densest and most durable granite stone. These fully vitrified floor tiles, which can either be unglazed or glazed, are characterised by low water absorption of below 0.5%. They're made from the highest quality raw materials fired to over 1200ÂșC.

When fixing porcelain tiles, use polymer-modified adhesives and grouts, especially formulated for the fixing and grouting of fully-vitrified tiles. The drying and maturing of ready-mixed adhesives will be restricted when used with porcelain products and many standard (cementitious) adhesives will not achieve sufficient bond strengths.

SPACER PEGS
Tiles should be spaced using proprietary tile spacer pegs. Normal joint widths of 2mm to 3mm are
recommended to ensure that modular co-ordination is maintained.

EDGING STRIPS
We recommend that proper tile edging strips are used for external corners and window reveals. Contact the customer helpline for further information about the edge detail of your tile choice and the supply of edging strips.

METALLIC AND DECORATIVE FINISHES
Care should be taken during installation and grouting to avoid damage. Abrasive cleaners and strong chemicals which may harm the decoration should not be used.

SHADING
During the course of manufacture of all ceramic tiles some variation in shade or pattern can occur. Before you fix your wall tiles, several cartons should be opened and their contents mixed to provide an attractive natural finish, an acceptable colour blend and to observe the direction of the patterning.
SIZE VARIATION
A slight variation in the overall size of tiles occurs during the manufacturing process. Wherever possible, sufficient tiles for the area to be covered should be obtained in one consignment to make sure that you get a supply of compatible sizes.

EXTERNAL USAGE
Certain floor tiles are not suitable for use in external situations. For further information on suitability please consult the customer helpline. Johnson Tiles cannot accept any liability for wall or floor tiles which have been fixed. This does not affect the statutory rights of the consumer.

FILLING IN GAPS
If you have completed a bathroom makeover and want to make sure that all the gaps are perfectly finished, use Johnson's Bathtrim. It's specially designed to fit over the joint between your sanitaryware and tiles using a waterproof silicone adhesive.

Bathtrim is available in Gloss White, Victorian Cream, Barley, Shark Grey, Rice, Peach Sorbet and Opal White. Each pack contains enough straight beads, mitred corners, stop ends and sealant to complete a standard bath or shower trim.

WALL TILES
Some wall tile glazes, particularly the more specialised effects used to create surface features and strong colours, are subject to crazing. This aspect is an inherent characteristic of the glazes and may occur after fixing but will not affect the performance of the tiles.

PRISMATIC FITTINGS
It is recommended that Prismatic fittings are used with Prismatics wall tiles to provide a glazed round edge as the prismatics wall tiles, in common with all the company's wall field tiles, do not have fully glazed edges. Alternatively proprietary tile edging strips should be used.

HIGHLY DECORATIVE TILES
Care should be taken during installation and grouting to avoid damage. Abrasive cleaners and strong chemicals which may harm the decoration should not be used.

COLOURED GROUTS
If coloured grouts are used then the manufacturer's instructions for use should be followed carefully. A trial area should be grouted before proceeding with the whole tiled area to check whether any staining of the tiles occurs. We cannot accept any liability for staining or damage to tile surfaces incurred during grouting of the tiles. Generally, the use of such grouts is not recommended with satin or matt glazed products.
