MEDIA STORY 1: BEST GREEN COMPANY LISTING FOR THIRD YEAR RUNNING
The Tunstall based ceramic tile manufacturer Johnson Tiles has been included in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies listing for the third time since its introduction in 2008. The company is ranked 33 overall in this year's awards which are organised annually by The Sunday Times to recognise companies at the cutting edge of corporate environmental performance improvement.
The awards process involves both the employer and the employees who complete a series of questionnaires and in the case of the employer the answers are supported by additional data to qualify the answers. For the employees, the 61 statement questionnaire seeks to ascertain whether the corporate greenness is simply greenwash or an ethos that permeates the company for all its activities. The 2010 survey has found that 86% of Johnson Tiles employees do not think that environmental initiatives are a waste of money. The company regularly communicates environmental matters to all employees including the targets for environmental improvements it sets each year. The company's target for carbon footprint reduction for 2008 to 2009 was a 3% reduction over the 12 month period. The actual reduction achieved was an 8% reduction cutting the footprint from 37,824 tonnes to 34,888 tonnes. The results of the staff questionnaire have revealed that 82% of Johnson Tiles employees do all they can to be green at home making energy adjustments and recycling as much as possible away from the workplace. A record 27,000 employees from all the listed companies completed the survey this year.
Ann Moult, Head of Personnel commented, “The listing for a third year running is no mean achievement and recognises the work everybody in the company does to actively reduce our environmental impact both locally and nationally. All our staff can be proud of their achievement over the last twelve months recognised once again by these awards.” The awards are verified by Bureau Veritas and Munro Global on behalf of The Sunday Times.
